Should This Bother Us?

I have no intention of getting rid of my microwave *any* time soon. It is a necessity item in our house with a new baby.

That said.....

I do wonder about said "appliance". Obviously, food can be heated up on the stove, in the oven, or even in a crockpot.

Let's say I were to heat up something in the oven. I take it out. I turn the oven off. If I put my hand in the oven right away I would feel heat, possibly burn myself if I touched any part of it.

If I heat something up in the microwave, the food comes out hot but the space in the microwave is cold.

That makes me wonder exactly what the heck is going on in there???!

I know, I know....it has to do with some kind of waves-type-thing radiating or causing molecules to move around and heat up or whatever (I know it has to be a fat, water, or protien molecule to react, that's why paper doesn't "burn" or anything in there).

But when you think too hard about it - it's really, really weird. W-E-I-R-D.

Genetic mutations.

Yes, really.

We joke about it all the time. ;)

we got rid of ours years ago - and I haven't missed it even for a second.
I am not convinced that it is dangerous. I am not convinced that it is bad.
But I am not convinced that it is safe, either. And with that doubt I figured, "why take the chance on something I don't really even need?"

When I was a kid, we had a Louisiana rice cooker. It's like a perforated double-boiler, but it isn't quite the same. We used it to reheat everything from spaghetti to pork chops to, well, rice. The best thing about it was that the longer you heated it, the more steam would help to keep it from drying out. it was relatively quick, too.

My dad kept using it, even after we had a microwave. The only thing he ever reheated in the microwave was coffee, and the only thing he ever cooked in it was oatmeal--but that wasn't until he couldn't stand for the three minutes it took on the stove to boil the oats while he stirred them.

I wonder if I could find one of those rice cookers.........

Verification word--"roperdo." "I wonder if this is what Mr. and Mrs. Roper do?" (You know, from Three's Company.) Roperdo. :) Love it!
